Inspired by her experiences in Mendoza, Argentina, Arrowood Winemaker Kristina Shideler has always been intrigued with Malbec’s violet and spice aromatics and how it can flesh out the palate when partnered with Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux-style red blends. Shideler’s Argentine aspirtations came to fruition after trying every ratio of Malbec to Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve optimal synchronization of these two varieties. Surprisingly, the best blend was an even 50/50 split of the two expressive, yet equally powerful, vineyard blocks from the Kellog Vineyard in Knights Valley.
The Malbec block sits near the base of Mount St. Helena at about 200 feet above sea level on rocky soils. This prime location enjoys a moderate climate that lends itself to producing deeply-colored Malbec with seductive dark aromatics and true varietal expression. The Cabernet Sauvignon block sits about 200 feet above the Malbec, planted on southeastern-facing terraces. This Cabernet Sauvignon block is known for its exotic and bright aromas and serious structure. Together with the Malbec a truly unique texture and aromatic profile is achieved, creating a harmonious dance that can only be called the Knights Tango.
