The team at Donelan Family Wines maintains that the best wine comes from unique sites. They apply their knowledge and experience toward identifying not only optimal vineyards, but also the most desirable qualities in each block, parcel and row. Donelan is not interested in making the average of any single vineyard (even if it is very good). Instead, they isolate the best of the best by segmenting vineyards based on natural variation within even the smallest sites. Their journey has taken them from producing exceptional Rhône varietal wines to seeking out unique vineyards tucked away across this diverse county.
Winemaker Joe Nielsen chose to offer a one-of-a-kind, cool-climate Syrah for the 2018 Barrel Auction because it is truly the passion of the Donelan clan. One of the sites selected for this blend was lost in the October 2017 wildfires, so this truly is the only opportunity to obtain this specific wine. The sites for the blend were chosen because they consistently produce grapes that have character, density and elegance that make transformative, food friendly wines. In the glass, you will find a wine with weightless power like an iron fist in a velvet glove, and an ideal example of Sonoma County Syrah.
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
