What started in the 1970s with a barn and 30 acres of Alexander Valley grapes has grown to more than 1,900 certified sustainable acres of vineyards in six appellations spanning Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties. Today, CEO Rhonda Carano carries on her late husband Don’s vision for the winery—particularly his love for acquiring special vineyard sites, the backbone of Ferrari-Carano’s philosophy of creating memorable wines from vine to bottle.
This distinctive, never before, never again wine, aptly-named Elevation, is comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (Clones 15, 169, 1103 on Paulson rootstock) from 22 year-old vines from LookOut Mountain, Ferrari-Carano’s southernmost mountain ranch at the apex of the Knights Valley, Alexander Valley and Chalk Hill appellations. The grapes for this wine are sourced from Block 31, and the vines are planted in ancient weathered sandstone soil with sandy loam in an east/west row direction at 1,150-foot elevation. The grapes were hand-picked and hand sorted, fermented in 100% stainless steel, and then pressed off before being barreled down. This wine is currently aging in Ferrari-Carano’s caves in 100% French oak, 30% new, and will have a total barrel age of 20 months before bottling in August of 2018.
Elevation has a dark, rich red color with robust and powerful aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberry, leather, caramel, black licorice, cocoa, pomegranate and cedar. Full with impressive depth and the perfect balance of flavor intensity, Elevation will drink well for 10 – 15 years.
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
