Winemakers Matt Smith and Nick Goldschmidt have collaborated on a “never before, never again” Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that celebrates the power and finesse of Cabs from this world-renowned AVA. Smith honed his winemaking skills as winemaking director at Jackson Family Wines making Cabernet Sauvignon ranging from Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve to the limited-production Jackson Estate Wines including Trace Ridge, Hawkeye Mountain and others. Goldschmidt is widely acknowledged as a “Maestro” of Cabernet Sauvignon, and his creations are sought out by critics and collectors alike. He came to Sonoma County in 1990 from his native New Zealand to take the reigns at SIMI, where he spent a total of 13 years and was one of the driving forces that brought the SIMI Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon program to acclaim on the world stage.
Today, Goldschmidt concentrates on making award-winning wines under his family’s labels including Goldschmidt Vineyards and Forefathers. He is a contributor to GrapeSeed Wines, where he collaborated with Matt to create Elementary, a Cabernet Sauvignon -focused brand led by two wines from Alexander Valley. For this lot Smith contributed wine destined for Sassoferrato “Monte de Ferro”, his Super Tuscan-styled red blend. The grapes were sourced from the Terra a Lago Vineyard at the southeast end of Alexander Valley. Goldschmidt contributed Cabernet Sauvignon from his Smith Vineyard at the northern end of the town of Healdsburg. The vineyards lie on the same line of latitude—38.6 degrees north—separated by 4.1 miles and the Russian River. Expect a sublime Cabernet Sauvignon of depth, texture, power and grace… nothing more, nothing less!
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
