ABOUT THE WINE

Iron Horse Estate is a 260-acre reserve in the Green Valley AVA, which lies entirely in the Russian River Valley, and is one of the coolest, foggiest areas for production of great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. One hundred percent of the vineyard is on Goldridge soil, a fine, sandy loam that is the remains of an ancient inland sea. A highly coveted soil type because of its excellent drainage and low soil fertility, Goldridge soil is ideal for Pinot Noir vineyards.

This “never before, never again” auction lot is 100% Green Valley, 100% estate grown fruit from all sites with the famous Goldridge sandy clay loam. It is a blend of three distinct vineyard blocks: North Block, Calera Clone, north facing slope; Home Block, Calera Clone, east facing slope; and Deer Gate, Clone 828, east facing slope. This wine will be Iron Horse’s only Pinot Noir blend of the 2016 vintage—the 40th harvest at Iron Horse, and is named for Audrey and Barry Sterling, who founded Iron Horse in 1976. Other than these five cases, especially created for this event, each of the blocks will be bottled separately.
