Papapietro Perry Winery is fortunate to have multiple outstanding vineyards to choose from for their special auction blend. After many rounds of grueling tasting trials, they arrived at a blend of the two vineyards that sparked their original success years ago – Peters Vineyard and Leras Family Vineyards.
In retrospect, it is not surprising. Both of these vineyards, whose ages range in 30 to 40 years old, are now showing the depth and complexity of maturity. Peters Vineyard, contributing clones 115 and Pommard, delivers juicy, fruit-driven wines with notes of big cherry and bright raspberry. Leras Family Vineyards, contributing Pommard clone, delivers a classic Russian River profile: a complex blend of clean red fruit flavors – usually raspberry, rhubarb and strawberry – coupled with cola, earth and minerality.
Working with such mature vineyards for so many years, their winemaking process is straightforward. They guide fruit through fermentation, acting upon the wine as little as possible, so that the vineyard and the vintage tell the story of the wine rather than the winemaking. The fruit is destemmed whole berry into bins and fermented to dryness, pressed and then aged for 11 months in a mix of new and neutral François Frères oak barrels.
The resulting wine has an inviting blue and red fruit nose with earthier notes showing as the wine gets air. There is oak, but it is notably well integrated, especially for such a young wine. The mouthfeel is lush with a wonderful infusion of refreshing acidity. Nice mid-palate depth and a super long finish. Overall, a supremely satisfying mouthful of wine.
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
