The Calling was created by Wine Entrepreneur Peter Deutsch and Sports Commentator Jim Nantz to showcase the finesse and elegance of Sonoma wines. Both of The Calling’s Founders have found success following their callings in life, and they have partnered to create a wine that reflects their shared regard for craftsmanship and their passion for exceptional wine.
This barrel lot is a unique blend of two clones of Pinot Noir from van der Kamp Vineyard, located at 1250-1500 feet on Sonoma Mountain. One of the oldest homesteads on the mountain, van der Kamp has been continually farmed for more than 100 years, and always planted to some variety of grapevine. The majority of the blend is La Tâche, with cuttings rumored to have originated from the La Tâche Grand Cru vineyard—world-famous for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. The other clone is known simply as ‘Old Vine,’ because the vines are rumored to be some of the oldest Pinot Noir plantings in California. These two clones thrive in the cool, north-facing van der Kamp Vineyard with plenty of sunshine to create a lush and elegant Pinot Noir, abundant with darker fruit notes of black plum and black cherry.
