The Calling was created in 2009 by Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits CEO Peter Deutsch and Emmy® award winning sports commentator, Jim Nantz. These two successful men became icons in their respective fields, and they have partnered to create a Pinot Noir that reflects their shared regard for persistence, vision and craftsmanship. For Jim and Peter, The Calling is about pursuing a passion and making handcrafted wines that bear the standard of excellence and style that are the hallmarks of their own philosophies.
Winemakers Dan Goldfield and James MacPhail created this one-and-only wine from Terra de Promissio, one of the premier vineyards within the newly appointed Petaluma Gap AVA. “Terra” in Latin means “the land”, and this land is planted to 50 acres of Pinot Noir vines. The soil, southwest sun exposure, hill elevation, vine density and the wind and fog of the Petaluma Gap allow the Terra de Promissio grapes to have a slow maturation and extended hang time, which allows optimum ripeness. It is an uncommon Pinot Noir from an up-and-coming region that reflects what this small vineyard is known for—rich flavors and layers of complexity.
