Mike and Valerie Thompson’s journey began with a trip to California wine country in 1997. Smitten with the wine, food and lifestyle of California wine country, they dreamed of having a vineyard and creating world-class Pinot Noir. After years of philanthropic work they purchased a six-acre plot on Westside Road in the Russian River Valley and began to source grapes and plant their estate vineyard.
This special barrel blend marries the characteristics of two vineyards featuring Pommard and Calera blended in 100% new French oak. The wine originated from a steep hillside vineyard high above the town of Occidental, a site known for producing wines with incredible intensity and structure. The main clone selected from this site is a Pommard clone, and it provides tremendous strength. A small percentage of fruit from a vineyard located in an extreme growing area near Annapolis was added to bring out a little spice and verve.
The wine is rich, round and elegant and full of dark berry cherry fruits that slowly evolve to reveal savory notes of spice and grilled meats. Great structure and plenty of acid and tannins help frame the wine, revealing layers of complexity with a long rich, elegant, and lovely finish. It is a serious wine for the serious collector, and it promises to be the centerpiece of any occasion.
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
