Virginia Dare Winery is Francis Ford Coppola’s second foray into Sonoma County, and it’s where he’s ushering in a new era of elevated quality and vineyard-specific wines.
With Sandy Walheim at the helm, the winemaking team has a network of prime vineyard sourcing options at their fingertips. She helped Coppola’s Director of Winemaking Corey Beck build their team into one of the most respected in the industry, known for their strong grower relations program and engaging approach with valued partner grape growers. Beck and Walheim are relying on their expertise and keen knowledge of the region’s premier vineyards to hand-select specific vineyards that reflect an appellation’s expressive characteristics.
This year’s auction lot comes from the famed King Family Vineyard, known as an extraordinary Pinot Noir producing vineyard, farmed by Lee Martinelli, Jr. The 2016 King Family Vineyard is distinctly Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. It’s fruit forward, jammy and rich with expressions of strawberry and bright cherry. Not only is it refreshingly complex and distinctive of the appellation, it’s a true representation of the style evolving at Coppola’s newly revitalized Virginia Dare Winery.
A winemaker dinner or store visit is offered as part of this lot. Must be scheduled on a mutually agreeable date and booked within a year of receipt.
