Harvest 2012 is underway for many grape growers and winemakers throughout Sonoma County, especially with Sauvignon Blanc and other varietals and vineyards located where earliest ripening traditionally takes place. For the rest of us, it is still a waiting game, dependent on sunlight and good weather to bring the grapes to their ideal ripeness for picking.
Photographer George Rose was recently exploring vineyards near Graton, home to the Green Valley of Russian River Valley appellation, which is among the coolest in Sonoma County. Nearby Freestone, where other photos were taken, is in Russian River Valley proper. Among the challenges awaiting proper ripeness is protection from birds, as you will see in the photo below.
